Digital Detox Month: How to detox from a digital life

For us at Vita, January is Digital Detox Month. What do we mean by this?

For us, Digital Detox means taking the time away from technology. Signing off social media, putting our phones away, and switching off from the noise a digital world.

We live in a world surrounded by technology - how many times do you pick up your phone? watch the TV? look at your laptop? too many to times to count perhaps.

there are many health and wellness benefits associated with time away from technology. We find it great for those who struggle to sleep and switch off; just by turning your phone off for an hour or 2 before bed could be the sleep and relaxation remedy you need.

Here are some pointers for how we are Digital Detoxing that you can also use:

- Mute your notifications: as simple as it sounds, just by muting your notifications on social media and messaging apps could help you start relaxing.

- Set screen time limits on your phone and other devices: a not-so-new initiative now, but one that you may not have heard of. Just head to your Settings> Screen Time> Downtime and then schedule when you'd like to have downtime each day and what apps you want downtime from. Give it a try!

- Have a day of no phones and no technology - it may sound scary at first, but there was a time when technology didn't exist. You'll feel more present!

- Get an alarm clock and stop using your phone as an alarm: its all too tempting to stop your alarm and head for social media, emails, etc. Using an actual alarm clock will help to combat this.

- Set internet free spaces: on your lunch break, in certain areas of your home/ work. Set boundaries with your tech.

Here’s some tips from Amie, our health specialist on how to Digital Detox for Sleep…

Sleep is a highly underrated health tool and those that suffer from broken or restless sleep will confirm it affects your mood, food choices and concentration levels the next day. The problem with device screens is that they produce blue light which is the part of the light spectrum most active in our sleep cycle. Stimulation of this part of the brain suppresses production of the sleep hormone melatonin, making it difficult for many people to “turn off” their brains and fall asleep. For a more restful sleep turn off all devices 1 hour before bed and if possible leave your phone charging in another room to stop notifications from disturbing you. When you wake try and give your brain at least 30 minutes before switching on a device to help reset your circadian rhythm. This rhythm is a 24-hour cycle that is part of the body’s internal clock, running in the background to carry out essential functions and processes. One of the most important and well-known circadian rhythms is the sleep-wake cycle so to repair the cycle give yourself time to come round in the morning before the scrolling begins.

We hope this tips will help you kickstart your digital detox with us!!
