Menopause and my skin

Let’s talk about the changes to your skin during menopause.

- During menopause, skin loses some ability to hold so you may notice your skin has become more dehydrated. It may feel tight and appear flaky. Look to use more hydrating products during this time. Either a hydrating mask, a hydrating booster or a more heavyweight moisturiser. Particularly at this time of year when most of us have dehydrated skin due to the weather.

- Your skin becomes more sensitive during this time. You may find you react to products or to heat more than before. Your skin may be itchy or red. Pair this will hot flushes and your skin will feel like it needs to be cooled and calmed. A cooling mist toner is helpful to apply throughout the day and also use products for sensitive skin to repair the skins barrier that becomes compromised with sensitivity. (See my next post for ingredients to avoid for sensitive skin).

- Our skin is loosing collagen during this time: Think of collagen like the scaffolding that holds up the skin, as we lose collagen, the skin looses tension and wrinkles appear. Look for products that replace collagen in the skin either topically or in the form of a collagen drink. Again hydration is key as a dehydrated skin will show lines and wrinkles more. Plumping and firming products are ideal.

- The change in hormones may mean you have more blemishes than before. Be careful not to solely switch to products for blemish prone skin as these are often designed for an oily skin but your skin is most likely to be dry. Switching out one product like your cleanser or a serum or mask to something that focuses on blemishes should be enough.

- Protect your skin with SPF every day of the year. The best way to do this is to have an SPF in your morning moisturiser. That way you don’t have to think about it.
