The skin is the largest organ of the body.
Step 1 - Increase Water Intake
The simplest thing you can do to ensure that your skin is properly hydrated is drinking more water. Drinking the recommended 6-8 glasses/3 litres a day will help rid the body of toxins and replenish your cells with nutrients.
Increasing your water intake will give your skin more of a radiant, healthier, more younger looking complexion and those who suffer from acne prone skin have reported the same results. Nothing will happen overnight, but even a good couple of weeks of increasing your water intake should be enough for you to see how important hydration really is.
If drinking unflavoured water sounds a bit tedious to you, why not try some other hydration heroes:
- Coconut Water
- Water with Fresh Fruit in (lemon for example)
- Green Tea (an amazing anti-oxidant + anti-inflammatory)
- Smoothies (containing your 5 a day)
Step 2 - Exercise more
Exercise is a great way of maintaining your skins health. Breaking a sweat isn’t the only way exercise benefits the skin. It also reduces bodywide inflammation, helps regulate skin-significant hormones and prevents free-radical damage. When you exercise, the tiny arteries in your skin open up, allowing more blood to reach the skin’s surface and deliver nutrients that repair damage from the sun and environmental pollutants. These nutrients also rev up the skin’s collagen production, preventing wrinkles.
The main benefits include:
- An Instant Glow - This is due to your circulation producing a nice dose of oxygenated blood.
- Wrinkle Reduction - Working out also helps maintain healthy levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol. Exercise actually supports the production of collagen. “The boost in this protein helps to keep your skin firm, supple, and elastic”.
- Acne Relief - Regular exercise boosts circulation. It nourishes the skin, bringing more blood flow and oxygen to it which helps draw toxins out of the body. Plus, all that sweating cleans out the pours of congested skin. Working out corrects the hormonal imbalance that can cause adult acne.
Step 3 - Healthy, Balanced Diet
The ideal way to get the nutrients you need for a radiant complexion is eating a healthy, balanced diet. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in anti-oxidants is good for your whole body, including your skin. Anti-oxidants are clinically proven to curb the damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals. These molecules can harm skin cells and cause signs of aging. One of the best ways to get more antioxidants is to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
Also, another food that should be involved within your diet are foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help keep the top outer layer of the skin strong and intact so that external toxins and pollutants are kept out.
Foods to control and consume in small quantities:
- Salt
- Milk
- High-Glycemic Foods
- Sugar
- Alcohol
Step 4 - Get more sleep.
Most people have experienced sallow skin and puffy eyes after a few nights of missed sleep. But it turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lacklustre skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic.
Sleep loss also causes the body to release too little human growth hormone. When we’re young, human growth hormone promotes growth. As we age, it helps increase muscle mass, thicken skin, and strengthen bones.
A few of our treatments we provide that can help sleep deprivation and relaxation:
- Our Infrared Sauna (£12 per session)
- Aromatherapy treatments
- Massage
- Facials

Step 5 - Apply SPF - always!
Over time, the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibres in the skin called elastin. When these fibres break down, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and loses its ability to 'bounce back'. So while sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when you’re young, it will definitely show later in life.
We make sure as professional, experienced therapists that we apply an SPF onto your skin after every facial we provide, whether its summer or winter. The UV rays from sunlight can still penetrate through clouds even on a rainy day, it can also reflect which is common in a lot of cases in which people can experience sunburn and sun damaged skin, for example, in countries where there is snow.
