Aromatherapy: What is it?

 


Aromatherapy can be defined as a therapy using aromatic essences extracted from plants and incorporating them into your life where they can support you in many many ways.

Aromatherapy is a fantastic way to:
• Increase productivity
• Ease aches and pains
• Relieve stress, depression, anxiety
• Relieve Insomnia
• Relieve Menopausal, digestive, circulatory and menstrual problems among others
• Detox

Not only can it help with all the above but you can use aromatherapy in several ways:

• Air diffusers- can be used in oil burners to fill the air with a wonderful natural scent

• Inhalation- some oils e.g. Eucalyptus oil is very good if blended in a bowl of hot water to inhale the steam and relieve the nasty symptoms of a cold

• Topical applications- essential oils can also be blended with a carrier oil such as almond or grape seed oil and applied to the skin for use in massage and to help with skin conditions

 Drinks- essential oils have been known to have cleansing effects on the body if a couple of drops are put into a glass of water. However you should refer to your aromatherapist if you want to try this and they can guide you in the right direction of which oil and how much of it you need.
** (NEVER apply a neat essential oil directly to the skin, it can cause severe irritation. NEVER ingest without first heavily diluting and checking with the manufacturer that it is safe for ingestion, some manufacturers add preservative chemicals to the oils which can be very dangerous if swallowed. ALWAYS blend carefully and store your oils in glass bottles)**


So the question is-which oils are best for you??

There are a huge amount of essential oils out there and many books on the market which can serve as a sort of essential oil dictionary, but to break some down for you, I have listed some easy to find and very useful oils below:


Best oils for boosting your immune system and helping you detox:

• Lemon- is detoxifying by nature, high in vitamin C, it aids your immune system, stimulating white blood cells and improving circulation.

• Peppermint- is great for digestive upset and IBS, it can also relieve headaches and reduce cravings for sugary foods.




Best oils for stress and to help you relax:

• Lavender- can help aid restful sleep which is always beneficial when you’re feeling stressed and fatigued. It has calming, sedative effects on the body and is great for PMS.

• Roman chamomile- great for easing anxiety, paranoia and other stressful situations. It is sweet and soothing and great for those suffering insomnia.


Best oils for focus and motivation:

• Grapefruit- is very stimulating on the body and mind, helping to focus the mind and be more motivated as well as stimulating the nervous system resulting in being much more alert. It is also great for promoting correct hormone secretion.

•Juniper berry- is very strengthening and stimulating on the emotions helping to boost self esteem and confidence.


Best for aches and pains:

• Frankincense- is effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis and muscular aches and pains. It can also relieve inflammation.

• Sandalwood- is great for relieving muscle spasms and sedating the nervous system to help relieve nerve pain.


Best oils for depression:

•Bergamot- has a stimulating effect on hormones and therefore emotions, it can help you to feel refreshed and bring a sense of joy and a boost of energy.

•Geranium- has a relaxing effect on the body helping to let go of negativity and lift the spirits.
