Eyes: Skin, Products and Ageing

Did you know the skin around our eyes is 10 times thinner than the skin on the rest of our body?

This makes it much more delicate and sensitive and therefore many of the products we use on our face, are not suitable for around our eyes.

Use your normal face products just up to the eye area and then use a specific eye cream around the eyes. Eye creams are designed specifically for that sensitive, thinner skin.

Also don’t forget your eyes need sun protection just like the rest of your skin. However your normal moisturiser with SPF or your sunscreen may not be suitable for use around the eyes. Opt for an eye cream with SPF or choose a physical SPF not a chemical one, as this will be kinder to the skin around the eyes. Dermalogica’s Invisible Physical Defense is an SPF that is suitable to use around the eyes.

Did you know the skin around our eyes is drier and produces less oil than the skin on the rest of our face.

This means it is important to hydrate the area but remember to use a specific eye cream and not the moisturiser that you use on your face.

What causes ageing around the eyes?

- allergies

- UV exposure

- Screen fatigue

- Alcohol

- Salty foods

- Dehydration

All of these things contribute to the ageing of our eyes. The muscles around our eyes are constantly being used.

What we can do?

- Make sure you protect the skin around your eyes from UV. Normal moisturiser with SPF isn’t suitable for the eye area and mani sunscreens are also not suitable for this delicate area. Choose an eye cream that has SPF or choose an SPF that is physical and not chemical and this will be better round the eyes. Dermalogica’s Invisible Physical Defense is an SPF that can be used around the eyes.

- Keep the area hydrated. Use a specific eye cream, created for the delicate eye area to get hydration into this natural dry area of skin.

- Use a tool such as Gua Sha stone or eye wands to de-puff the eyes.

- Use an eye specific night cream. Many night products that contain actives such as retinol are not suitable around the eyes. Opt for an eye night cream as the actives will be specially developed to suit the eye area. Actives such as retinol are fantastic for reducing fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes.

- Less is more. Lots of people use too much eye cream. A grain of rice size of cream should be used. Pat gently around the eye orbit and then blend in a circular motion.
